Megan Jane Colville, Profile

Q&A with Megan Jane Colville

She simply loves love, and draws inspiration from many things, including the miracle of love that manifests in front of her eyes in her role as a midwife. Today we find out more about Megan Jane Colville.

Hey Megan, can you tell us about yourself in 3 sentences?
Sure, I believe the best days involve rain, books, and blankets. I daydream about snow while I live down-under in the heat, and I’m the rare breed of Aussie that isn’t a fan of the beach. I believe fairy lights make everything better and storms make me feel alive – and I absolutely love stories.

How long have you been writing?
I feel like I have been writing forever. I have scrap pieces of paper with book ideas and snippets of dialogue that date back from when I was eight and I still remember writing stories on the back of paper drink coasters whenever my family would go out for a meal. I truly began formulating and crafting stories when I left high school and haven’t stopped since.

What genre do you write?
I write in multiple genres, primarily contemporary and medical romance; however, I also have a historical fantasy novel set in the pre-roman, iron age that has a deep hold of my heart.

What draws you to this genre?
I love the fluidity of the contemporary genre and the primary position the love story plays against this background. The juxtaposition of a love story within a fast-paced, emotionally intense medical setting is fantastic to write. Fantasy calls to my soul as a mean of introducing deep themes and ideas that we may think aren’t as relevant in contemporary society.

Where do you get your ideas?
Everywhere! My notes app on my iPhone is filled with things I see, hear, taste, and smell that I can imagine in my novels. Working as a midwife has also placed me in a privileged position to witness the miracle of love and partnership firsthand which has had a tremendous impact on my writing.

Tell us about your process, how do you get into a writing mindset?
Working as an on-call midwife I can be called to deliver babies at all hours of the day and night so my current writing process involves writing whenever, and wherever I can. Ideally, I love space to write, usually that involves clearing my kitchen table, spreading my notes and papers and opening my laptop up. On long writing days I have been known to drag an armchair from the lounge room into the kitchen. Chairs are interchangeable – my kitchen table is not.

What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently delighting in wrangling the love story of heroine dead set against a relationship with a police officer, and the cop too stubborn to let her get away without a fight.

Which writers inspire/influence you?
Nora Roberts, Jayne Anne Krentz, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips are my heroes. Their novels are filled with complex characters and dynamic partnerships of everyday characters living everyday lives. As an author, I deeply respect the business aspect of the careers these women have forged.

Why do you write romance?
Because love is all that matters. When we strip away the artifice of life love is what keeps us together and pushes us through. Love always triumphs, even when the journey is perilous and all may seem lost.

What else about your writing journey should we know?
I’m at the start of my journey and I am so excited for what the future will bring.

What is your favourite childhood book?
The very first book I recall reading was a board book entitled, ‘Is this the house of Mistress Mouse?’ by Richard Scarry. A children’s story that I remembered but didn’t think too much about until I reread it a few years ago and realised it was a romance. It tells the story of two lonely mice finding each other and creating a family. Is there anything greater in life? Thanks Mum.

What is the best thing about being a Love Sabrist?
I am beyond grateful to have found my tribe, they are such an incredible group of women that understand and support each other through everything. Above all, however, the greatest gift these women have given me is joy. They are hilarious, and I have so much fun in their company. I am a serious person by nature, and the silliness and mischief we get up to has been life changing for me. I can’t thank, or love, my Love Sabre women enough.
